How to Extend the Lifespan of Your LEV System Through Regular Servicing

Planned maintenance can help limit avoidable wear and identify problems before they develop further. The working life of an LEV system depends on its design, materials, contaminants, workload and care; no servicing programme can guarantee a fixed number of extra years.

Know the equipment and its limits

Keep the system instructions and a record of the machinery and processes it serves. Review extraction when production or materials change. A system operating outside its intended conditions may need design changes as well as maintenance.

Look after filters and air cleaners

Follow the specified inspection and cleaning arrangements. Investigate changes in pressure or airflow rather than replacing filters solely by calendar date. Replacement elements must suit both the equipment and contaminants. Confirm part numbers and specifications before ordering.

Inspect connections and moving components

Routine checks can identify damaged flexible ducting, loose connections, unusual noise or visible deterioration. Arrange competent maintenance with safe access and isolation. Do not open equipment, remove guards or attempt repairs unless authorised and competent for the task.

Use a system log

Record checks, cleaning, filter changes, faults and repairs against the system reference. Repeated failures can reveal a wider problem that routine replacement alone will not solve. Keep relevant commissioning and examination information available for the people assessing the equipment.

Plan servicing and examination separately

The maintenance schedule should reflect instructions, condition and use. It may need attention much sooner than its next thorough examination. Most LEV systems require that examination at intervals of no more than 14 months, with shorter intervals for some specified processes.

Servicing addresses equipment condition; examination assesses performance. After repairs or alterations, agree what checks are needed to confirm the system is suitable for normal operation.

Budget for repair or replacement

Ask for findings and options when components are worn or obsolete. Consider access to spare parts, recurring faults, changes to the process and the scope of any upgrade. Extending equipment life is useful only while the system remains suitable for its purpose.
