Why Regular LEV Servicing Is a Legal Requirement, Not Just Good Practice
When LEV is used to control exposure to hazardous substances, employers must keep it maintained. That means planning attention to the equipment throughout its working life, rather than relying on the date of the last test alone.
Maintenance and examination are different
Maintenance keeps equipment in working condition: cleaning, replacing filters, addressing wear and repairing defects. A thorough examination and test assesses whether the extraction performs as intended. Servicing does not replace that examination, and a report does not remove the need for maintenance.
Set the servicing schedule around the equipment
There is no single servicing frequency suitable for every LEV system. Consider the manufacturer’s instructions, contaminants, operating hours, filter condition and previous faults. Agree routine checks and planned work with people competent for the tasks involved.
The familiar 14-month maximum relates to thorough examination and testing for most LEV systems. Some specified processes require shorter intervals. Do not use that maximum as a reason to leave damaged or poorly performing equipment unattended.
What to include in a maintenance plan
Identify systems and the processes each serves.
Define user checks and how faults are reported.
Schedule cleaning and component inspections.
Record filter and part specifications before replacement.
Arrange safe access and isolation for maintenance.
Record work completed and any outstanding defects.
Respond to changes in performance
Reduced airflow, unusual noise, damaged connections or visible escape of contaminants should prompt investigation. Assess whether affected work can continue safely. Repairs may need performance checks or further examination before the system returns to normal use.
Keep useful records
Maintain a system log with inspections, servicing, filter changes, repairs and follow-up actions. Retain thorough examination reports for at least five years. These records help the next examiner understand changes and recurring problems.
